Birthday Flowers... Kayla Edition
Our Growing Family Traditions – 2020 Chapter 10 in my book talks about birthday flowers; how I sent flowers to my mom when it was my birthday. As a young adult, my daughter Kayla continued the tradition of sending flowers to me on her birthday. This year I received a box in the mail on her birthday. On the enclosed card, Kayla wrote how she wanted to put a personal twist to the tradition of birthday flowers. She wanted to send me Polish pottery. I unwrapped the delicate package to find a beautiful water pitcher. The hand-painted design was delightful. You might ask how did the tradition go from flowers to Polish pottery? Well here is the story… The mom of Kayla’s college friend owns a Polish Pottery shop in a small town about 3 hours from where we live. The first time Kayla visited her friend, she was introduced to the world of Polish pottery. After hours of deliberation in the shop Kayla chose a casserole dish for me (per my request) and a few unique pieces for herself. We were hooked!! Each visit Kayla made over the years, she brought home a new piece or two for each of us. One weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting the store. Upon walking into the store I was overwhelmed; the unique patterns, the colors, the different shapes and sizes. We spent an hour just looking and gathering our thoughts about the possibilities. How would I decide what to purchase for myself and the two shower gifts I was looking for? We went to lunch and then returned with our thoughts a little more in order. Maybe not in total order, it still took another hour to make our purchases. Over the years my collection of pottery has grown, from bakeware to decorative pieces and holiday décor. Recently, Kayla found a Polish pottery shop near her new home. This is where my latest addition has come from. I keep most of my pieces on display in my kitchen, enjoying the beautiful hand-painted works of art each day.
